Error Message 'Invalid File Type' When Uploading to the Web File Manager

THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO:

All versions of Knowledgebase.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION:

When attempting to upload a file to Knowledgebase (in the Web File Manager, Attachment Library, or as an article), you receive the message "Error: You have uploaded an invalid file type."

ROOT CAUSE:

The file type extension may not be included in the approved file types listed in the KB Admin Control Panel.

Important Note
: the file extension is case sensitive for some earlier versions of Knowledgebase. So, if you have ".JPG" entered as a valid file type and the file to upload has an extension of  ".jpg" the system will return this error. If you see this behavior you may enter the upper case version of the extension as an allowed type (as a workaround), or you can update your Knowledgebase software to the current version to resolve this behavior fully.

SOLUTION OR WORK AROUND:

  1. Please check the file type extension of the file you are uploading and check whether the extension is present in the allowed file types listing.
    • In the KB Admin Control Panel, click the Administration tab.
    • Select System Settings.
    • Click Edit in the File Types area.
    • Review the listed file types to ensure all desired file types are included.
  2. If the extension you are attempting to upload is not listed there, you will need to add it to the list of approved file types. To do this:
    • Click either the New Article Type or New Resource Type link (depending on which you are adding)
    • Enter the name of the file type you are adding in the Name field.
    • Enter the file extension (.docx, .pdf, .xlsx, etc) in the Extension field.
    • Click Save.

For earlier versions:
If you find you are experiencing this issue due to case sensitivity, the recommended workaround is to rename the original file to have a lower case extension (.gif insteasd of .GIF). Alternatively, you can edit the allowed file types to include a capitalized extension. Add a New Article Type and New Resource Type with a capitalized extension (.GIF, .JPG, .DOC) for each of the currently allowed lowercase extensions (.gif, .jpg, .doc).

The recommended method to fully fix this issue is to update your Knowledgebase software to the current version.
