Incorrect Order of Search Results in Article Group Restricted Portals

THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO:

Knowledgebase versions prior to 8.1

ISSUE DESCRIPTION:

Search results are not presented with the anticipated order IE: in order of content weight on customer facing portals where Article Group restrictions are enforced.

ROOT CAUSE:

Article Groups are not being cached by the Microsoft Index Server. As a result the order of the search results are not accounting for the influence of the Article Groups.

SOLUTION OR WORK AROUND:

This fix is only valid for versions 8.0.3 and later. If the KnowledgeBase is an earlier version upgrade to at least 8.0.3 to take advantage of this fix.

  1. On the Knowledgebase application server, open the file config-portal.xml located at:
    • [drive]:\ProgramFiles\Knowledgebase.net\knowledgebase\applicationprogram\ini\system\config-portal.xml.
  2. Next, change the value:
    • From: 0 <<To: 1 <<
  3. Go to Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Indexing Service > articlesPublished > Properties.
  4. Next, double-click on the articlegroup property and check the Cached property. See figures below:

  5. Stop and restart the Microsoft Index Server to re-index the articles.
Note: The above will cause a re-indexing activity on the Knowledgebase application server.  The time required to complete re-indexing will vary based on the size of the content stored.  Please plan during an appropriate maintenance window to avoid potential performance impacts.

AFFECTED SYSTEMS & USERS:

Knowledgebase users who are searching for articles in customer facing portals that are restricted by article groups
