Error Message '80040e4d' Received While Logging Into Knowledgebase Admin Control Panel
THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO:
ISSUE DESCRIPTION:
When attempting to log into the Knowledgebase Admin Control Panel the following error is displayed:
“Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e4d'[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'KNOWLEDGEBASE\IUSR_KNOWLEDGEBASE'.

ROOT CAUSE:
There are three possible causes for this error message:
- The IUSR account does not have Anonymous Access
- The IUSR account is locked out
- The DSN connections are not working correctly
SOLUTION OR WORK AROUND:
Cause 1: Verify that the IUSR account has Anonymous Access
- Log in to the Knowledgebase Application Server as a user with Administrator rights
- Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Manage from the menu option.
- In the Computer Management window expand Services and Applications > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager > Web Sites
- Right-click on ClientPortal and choose Properties from the menu option.
- Within the Directory Security tab choose Edit for the Authentication and Access Control section
- Verify that Enable anonymous access is checked for the IUSR User name
- Click OK to save any changes
- Click OK to close out of the ClientPortal Properties
- Repeat steps 4 - 8 for CustomerPortal
Cause 2: Verify that the IUSR account is not locked out
- In the Computer Management window expand Local Users and Groups > Users
- Right-click the IUSR account and choose Properties from the menu option.
- Verify that Account is disabled is not checked
- Click OK to save any changes
- Close out of the Computer Management window
Cause 3: Verify that the DSN connections are working correctly
- Click Start > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC)
- Click the System DSN tab
- There should be 7 System Data Sources listed.

ecrmUser - For each entry step through the following:
1) Highlight the System Data Sources name and click Configure
2) Click Next
3) Verify the SQL Server Login ID and enter the Password
4) Click Next
5) Click Next
6) Click Finish
7) The ODBC Microsoft SQL Server Setup configuration window will be displayed with a Test Data Source button
8) Click the Test Data Source button
9) A window should be returned with a TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY! message. This indicates that the DSN is configured and operating correctly.
10) Press OK to close out of the windows and test the rest of the System Data Sources
Once any issues with these three causes are corrected users should no longer see the error message when logging into the Knowledgebase Admin Control Panel.
