Non-English Glossary Items Display Question Marks Instead of Accented/Special Characters when Imported.

THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO:

Knowledgebase all versions

ISSUE DESCRIPTION:

After importing non-English glossary terms, language specific accented characters are not appearing, but are replaced by question marks (?).

ROOT CAUSE:

When importing text content into Knowledgebase, it is required to use UTF-8 formatting. If the text file is not in UTF-8 format, it will not be properly imported into Knowledgebase and will result in odd formatting errors. In the case of the glossary items, the accented characters appear as question marks.

SOLUTION OR WORK AROUND:

If this issue is encountered when importing text into Knowledgebase, please locate the source .txt file and open it within Notepad. Then re-save the file in UTF-8 format and re-import the file. Since it is in the correct format, the content will import intact.

To save a .txt file in UTF-8 format please follow these steps:
  1. Locate the source .txt file to be imported.
  2. Right click the file and click "Open With".
  3. Select Notepad.
  4. When the text file opens, in the upper left click File and choose Save As
  5. Ensure the Encoding drop down menu shows UTF-8 as seen here:
  6. Click Save.

AFFECTED SYSTEMS & USERS:

Knowledgebase authors/editors/administrators who attempt to import .txt file content.
